About Us - Elemental Landscapes, Inc.

Any successful landscape is made up of three crucial components or ‘Elements’…

ELEMENTS OF DESIGN

A design that works for any given site.

ELEMENTS OF CRAFTSMANSHIP

Skilled craftsmanship to create the hard aspects of the design.

ELEMENTS OF NATURE

Nature’s gifts; stone, plants, water… to create and soften the design.

…hence, the formation of Elemental Landscapes, Inc.”

    Jerry R. Parmenter, Owner/Founder

Jerry’s interest in the outdoors began at a very young age. He grew up on his family farm located in Voorheesville; about twenty minutes outside of Albany. He is very proud of this farm known as “Hickory Ridge Farms” which has been in his family for over seventy-five years. Although no longer farmed, this diverse property has served as Jerry’s playground his entire life.

Jerry’s landscaping career began at the young age of six when he took over the lawn mowing services for his great grandmother who was unhappy with her previous helper. Using an old fashioned rotary mower Jerry quickly realized the power of capital as well as the need for proper equipment on a job! From that point on, his interest in landscaping and construction developed as he acquired several customers doing every odd job he could find throughout his home town.

Jerry’s interest in landscaping and strong commitment to professionalism, led him to the University of New Hampshire where he began studying Horticulture in 1994. After two years, he transferred to Cornell University and continued his studies under the guidance of Dr. George Good.

While obtaining an Honors bachelor degree in Ornamental Horticulture from Cornell University, Jerry was able to take advantage of several valuable opportunities. An internship at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, exposed him to public garden management including extensive nursery management training. The following year Jerry had the privilege of studying landscape design under William H. Frederick Jr. at his private garden in Hockessin, Delaware.

After completing his degree in 1998, Jerry went to Great Britain in fulfillment of an international work/study scholarship (Dreer Award) awarded by Cornell. This time abroad provided him with the unique opportunity to serve as a hardscape apprentice for two of the top landscape companies in England. These companies also afforded him exposure to landscape projects for the Royal Family and provided him with the opportunity to construct a display at the world-famous Chelsea Flower Show.

While working in England, Jerry became adept at several unique hardscape techniques, including dry stone walling, stone setting and brick work. He also traveled throughout Europe studying landscape design and construction practices.

Jerry returned to the United States in 2000 where he continued practicing landscape construction for a reputable landscape company on Stratton Mountain, in Vermont.

In the spring of 2001, Jerry returned to Hickory Ridge Farms and established his company, Elemental Landscapes, Inc. This company is a residential landscape design-build firm specializing in hardscape construction and plant installation. Jerry is in his thirteenth season as a business and continues to work toward his goal of raising the standard of landscape design and construction in the greater capital district.

Over the last decade, Jerry has been an active member of the New York State Nursery & Landscape Association. During this time, his company has won several Environmental Beautification Awards for various landscape projects he has entered. His dedication and leadership has earned him positions as Regional President and he currently serves on the state wide Executive Board.

Jerry has also made his mark within the NYS Certified Nursery & Landscape Professional program. He was instrumental in the creation of two new chapters in the CNLP certification manual; Landscape Principles and Landscape Design. In 2008, Jerry was appointed Statewide CNLP Chairman and has continued to work toward improving the certification program.

Outside of work, Jerry loves spending time outdoors with family and friends in the Adirondacks. He is blessed with a wonderful wife and two young daughters, all of whom should be commended for their patience! Without the love and support from his entire family, friends, and team at Elemental Landscapes, Inc.; he would not have achieved his success.
